Hello everyone
recently i have had a real problem with my neck, it has always been painful due to R A but in the last few months the pain is so bad i find that my neck feels like it can not support my head. I have started wearing a collar(the type people have when they have whiplash) in the evenings to try and stop the pain. I take oramorph but it does not bring any relief for this neck pain.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so how do you manage it
any information or help you can give will be great
love to all

Hi Sharon
I m afraid I don t really have any idea about neck pain, but something is certainly not right. I would contact your consultant as soon as you can and if he has been dismissive I would seek a second opinion. I m sure others on the forum may well be able to give you advice as well.
Hope you get some improvement very soon.

Hi Sharon
When I first had RA 91/2 years ago, I had pain everywhere including my neck. I had to wear a coller for a while but once I was settled on mxt it settled down. I hope yours settles with the collar for support.

I think it's probably time for you to insist on having a neck scan, Sharon, to get to the bottom this. I get neck pain from time to time, but nothing like you are describing. Have you asked the GP for sone stronger pain meds to keep you going?
Hope you soon feel better and sending lots of gentle hugs
Love Jeanxx

Hi Sharon, My neck is where my problem started, before going to all other joints, and still remains a weak spot. It does not take much of a rise in my CRP for me to feel it in my neck. Had to get an emergency appointment at Rheumatology with the nurse to have a steriod injection yesterday, as my neck had become unbearable, causing head pain and into my eyes, which in turn makes me sick. The consultant also came to talk with me and has suggested physio and talked of massage, accu puncture and tens machine. However did have accupuncture before, and this seemed to make it worse for me, so consultant feels we will leave that one out. So maybe a referral to physio may help you also. On a morning my neck is usually bad, and feels unstable and crunches and grinds a lot through the day. Having had the steriod injection yesterday, today is the first day for a long time where I am not experiencing any pain. Hope this helps, and you feel some relief soon. Love Candy x

Just to add Sharon, I did have a scan at the beginning, which showed nothing untoward. However like others have suggested, if you haven't had one it may be a good idea to request this. Candy x

Hello Sharon
I have always had problems with neck pain since I contracted RA nearly 25 years ago. However, apart from taking the usual painkillers, I try to find time to lay down on the bed and using just one pillow placed so that the lower edge is across the back of my shoulders and the soft bulk of the pillow is snug into the nape of my neck. I try to lay still like this for about an hour and usually end up dosing. Make sure, if possible, that the room is warm and well ventilated and above all that you are not disturbed (that's a bit of a tall order, I know!)
I nearly always get some pain relief from this rest and the 'coffee granuales' in my neck calm down and are not so active.
I hope this is helpful - it's worth a try.
Best wishes...
Ellie

Hi Sharon
Sorry to hear you are suffering from severe neck pain. I can sympathise with you as I have the same...I have physio once a week on my shoulder & neck area which really helps. I take co-codamol 500/30 2x 4xdaily, and amitryptiline 10mg x 2 PRN for the pain. Also capsacin chilli cream to rub in. I also have to have a hot bath every night and soak my neck & shoulders which helps to. If I can help any more let me knw...take care...x

Hi All
Thankyou for your replies and good wishes I am currently on Humiraand a lot of pain relief, Oramorph, fentynal patches (225) tramadol and oxycodone, my problem is that although i have been on Humira for 18months i have had 11 infections in that time so i have been off the Humiramore than on it during that time.My consultant says that because i have had so many brakes in my treatment the Humira has not had a chance to work effectively
What has been decided now is that i will go onto a maintenance dose of antibiotics while taking the Humira to see if the infections can be prevented and hopefully let the Humira get my RA under control and maybe help the neck pain and the pain in all my other joints.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that the antibiotics work
love to all Sharon

I hope that all improves for you Sharon as that intense neck pain is quite unbearable and not easily helped. Your GP and Rheumie have ruled out Polymyalga I presume? xxx
